BECOMING SELF AWARE

BECOMING SELF AWARE
November 7, 2017 Joy Iseki

Today begins the first of the weekly series I shall hold this month on self awareness. My concern will be around it’s role our evolving life’s journey.

What is self-awareness?

Self-awareness is a conscious knowledge of your own character and feelings. It is actually being aware and acquainted with Self. According to Wikipedia, “Self-awareness is the capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals.”

Self-awareness then depends on an understanding of your past and present self, and could give insights into your future.

Being aware of Self can go a long way to change the direction of your life.

If you can carry out an honest evaluation of yourself, what you have been through, your reactions and responses to what you went through and compare that to your current self and situations, you can by this simple exercise, transform the projectile of your life’s direction forever. But the key is to be honest with self and become more aware of your thoughts, your experiences with people and the influence of the environments you have lived in.

To become more aware of Self, you have to reflect a lot on your life and also become more aware of your thoughts. What is it you think about most? Ask questions about you and get intimated with reasons you do certain things. What makes you respond differently to some things and in some way to others? What do you think makes you different? And why do you reckon that some things have happened in particular ways that seem peculiar to you?

Self awareness is a call to the study of yourself. And that is a good thing. Not a lot of people do this. Many of us would boast of how well we know of someone else while we are rarely aware of who we are.

Those who want to live according to what they are designed for must pay attention to the proclivities of their heart. You ought to be the first thing to be known by you.

There may be blind spots here and there, but that should not be a reason to be ignorant of yourself. This habit of becoming more aware of self may seem unpleasant at first especially if it is something you have not really been engaged in before now. But as with other things in life, you will master it with more practice. The most important part is to start.

To your evolving life.
